History: Jackson County was formed in 1851 from Haywood and Macon counties. It has an area of 491 square miles, and is bordered on the north by Swain County, on the east by Haywood and Transylvania counties, to the south by South Carolina and to the west by Macon and Swain counties.

Jackson County was named for Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States. The county seat of Jackson County is Sylva, which was named for a Danish immigrant named William Sylva. Jackson's original county seat was Webster, but it was moved to Sylva after a public referendum in 1913.
