In 2008, the Sheriff requested and was granted by the Board of Commissioners a full time Sheriff’s Attorney. This attorney answers directly to the Sheriff and helps daily with legal matters that effect the Sheriff, his staff and daily law enforcement operations throughout Jackson County. This position is currently held by Mark Welch. Mark received his law degree in 1986 from Campbell Law School and has been a certified law enforcement officer since 1986. He has previously been employed as a Special Agent with the State Bureau of Investigations, a Hickory police officer, a Caldwell County Magistrate, a Legal Instructor with the North Carolina Justice Academy, and Deputy Sheriff in Jackson County.
